History

In November 1999, with the right hand of fellowship from the Main Street Church of Christ, the D’Antignac Street Church of Christ, the Central Church of Christ, and the Grace Street Church of Christ, Bro. Robert J. Ray (former member of the Lincoln Garden Church of Christ in Cleveland, MS) began evangelistic efforts in Grovetown, GA, just outside of Augusta, Ga. His goal was to plant the Lord’s Church in an area where there was no Church. After walking the streets passing out Bible tracts and standing outside local launderettes and convenient stores, some interest was generated about the Lord’s Church. Upon approval from the mayor of the city of Grovetown, Bro. Ray, his wife (the late Sis. Joyce Etta Ray) and two sons, Sis. Mattie Scott and her grandchildren began holding Bible studies at the City Hall of Grovetown in November 1999. It was a slow process of befriending the people of Grovetown, but God blessed our efforts. In March 2000 the Grovetown Elementary School cafeteria was secured as a meeting place for Sunday morning worship services. The Gospel was being preached in Grovetown. Some members came from the Meadowbrook and Evans Churches of Christ to help. With powerful teaching and preaching from God’s word, we began to see the first fruits of our labor in July 2000 with 6 baptisms. We had 9 more baptisms in August and September, and 2 restorals. We had 8 baptisms in 2001 and have had over 100 baptisms since beginning the work. In spite of the shortage of money, in February 2001 we purchased property at 501 E. Robinson Avenue and renovated the existing building through much painstaking effort. But God sent other laborers into His harvest. Special thanks to the late Sis. Freddie Mae Nichols, Willie Safford, Vincent and Letha Richards, Willie and Sophia Nero, Harold and Michelle Woods and a host of other members far and near.

Currently, the Grovetown Church of Christ is incorporated in the state of Georgia and has just completed a new edifice at our site. Our active membership is 26. We are striving to be known as the “Friendliest” congregation in the entire Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), and we invite all those who love the LORD into our fellowship.

As we reflect upon our brief past it is obvious that God is with us. We have come this far by faith leaning on the LORD. Nobody told us that the road would be easy, but we know without a doubt that He didn’t bring us this far to leave us.
